Music From An Album That does Not Exist
A Guy Called Mark - A Mix Selection For A Warm
Summer Night.
Outa nowhere comes a new mix selection of funk
and soul and the funkified hip hop it inspired
from an unknown DJ- A Guy Called Mark. Definitely
from outa nowhere. Hailing from the small sleepy
town of Glen Ellen,California... population:
1200 huh ! where's that??? Yeah me too. I guess
its in the prestigous northern california wine
country !hmmm yeah... o.k. well it was also home
too the famous Jack London... no not the famous
british DJ who has his residency in Brussels-
SubLevel SubLime club... sorry, he's the literary
writer(writes books!)... Did you see the movie
White Fang... with a ... ouch! hottie ! young
Ethan Hawke... anyways that was based on one of
his books.
Well his first collection of DJ set mixes is
well... sharp as a White Fang ! The tracks are
from funk and soul's greatest artists, along
with lesser known acts... well to the general
public anyway, but equally masters of their funk
and soul, along with their hip hop counterparts
from which each has sampled their forefathers
musical gems.
His choice of songs are like a great collection
of short stories or poetry(rhymes to rap, analog
tape to DAT..yeeeeah boyhhh!)Each track is
imbued with a mans sense of self worth, the love
and longing for and of a good woman, of your
roots and the respect of the old way of doing
things(ole scoo beeatch).Theres also
anger,paranoia and the bragging.
His mix transitions are silky
smooth like golden butter spread firmly but
gently over a good womans big bodacious brown
bootay ! yeeeah boyhhh ! Buttered and browned
bisquits... can't you just taste them ! Ohh..
yeah... anyways, the transitions change or
pass like from father to son( old shcool to nu
shcool) with the charistics of say Freddie
Scotts- You got what I need, the love and
appreciation of a woman maybe not instilled
so correctly in Biz Markie's version, where too
much may sometimes get you taken advantage of
"You say he's just a friend..." Now the Isley
Brothers/ice Cube combo was not so smooth but
it sounds like the tempo went up 10 bpm
probally to accomadate Cubes rythmn flow, making
it a hard transition. The Isley Brothers-
between the sheets talk of feeling good and
alright, all night translated by Biggie to a
more bragging bravado of his skills in his
crib and how he out does other brothers...
Of course the hip hop artist are just looking
for a mad sample to use too make their shit
tight. But maybe their just looking to trade in
on the familarity of the tune and the quality
to win over more fans? But it seems like
somewhat that the acts of today are missing some
of the originality and maybe idealogically
missing the point of those they admire. Where
the old scool express their concern for
various things going on in the world the youth
rambles about terrible plots and their
increasing paranoia. Where their idols sing of
respect for themselves and others they shout and
demand it. And where the Masters speak of the
love for and of a good woman, to make each other
feel alright, the punks! of today spew filth and
bragg about how they can please a woman or how
they get their F on and then dump the Ho!
I for one don't want to live in a world of hate
and filthiness and I won't stand for it any
longer! Can't we all just get along and learn to
love each other !!!!!!!!!
So although the ideas don't transition smoothly
A Guy Called Marks mixes do... smooth and tight
for me too stick it too all night!!
